Echolink

Echolink is an interactive system that connects family members across distance through shared sound and physical interaction. It addresses the emotional gap between younger and older generations, especially when living apart. The system includes a mobile app for recording daily sounds and a wall-mounted modular device for elders to receive and interact with them. By moving and combining hexagonal modules, users can create new sound compositions. This process encourages participation from both sides and turns everyday moments into a shared experience, strengthening emotional connection through co-creation.

Mengqi Zhao is an industrial designer based in Brooklyn. She is interested in how physical objects and simple interactions can help people stay connected, especially between different generations. Her work often combines sound, touch, and everyday experiences. Her current project is inspired by her personal relationship with her grandparents.
